hundreds of books! thousands of books! millions and billions and trillions of books!

I wish.

As I mentioned in January, I had a goal to read 30 books recreationally this year. I didn’t quite make it – I only managed 20. I think that’s ok though, considering everything that went on this year school- and work-wise. Without further ado, here’s the list as well as how I felt about it (R= I’d recommend it, N= I felt neutral about it. Fortunately this year I didn’t read any books that I absolutely wouldn’t recommend):

  1. The Historian, Elizabeth Kostova (R)
  2. The Well of Lost Plots, Jasper Fforde (R)
  3. Alice in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll (R)
  4. Interred With Their Bones, Jennifer Lee Carrell (R)
  5. Dear John, Nicholas Sparks (N)
  6. Skeleton Dance, Aaron Elkins (R)
  7. The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, Stephenie Meyer (N)
  8. To Say Nothing of the Dog, Connie Willis (R)
  9. Brave New World, Aldous Huxley (R)
  10. The Doomsday Book, Connie Willis (N)
  11. The Lost Symbol, Dan Brown (R)
  12. Chocolat, Joanne Harris (R)
  13. The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins (R)
  14. Water for Elephants, Sara Gruen (R)
  15. Stardust, Neil Gaiman (N)
  16. Catching Fire, Suzanne Collins (R)
  17. Mockingjay, Suzanne Collins (N)
  18. The Maltese Goddess, Lyn Hamilton (N)
  19. The Graveyard Book, Neil Gaiman (R)
  20. People of the Book, Geraldine Brooks (R)

For 2011, I’m going to keep the same goal of reading 30 books by the end of the year. I think it will be more doable this year because I’m done with the bulk of my classes and won’t have to be doing 3 classes per semester anymore. I also have several books lined up to read so I won’t have any problem figuring out what to read next. The only problem is…in what order do I read them?

(If you’d like to recommend an order or another book, here’s my to-read list courtesy of Goodreads)

  1. What is “Water for Elephants” about? Do you think I would like it? I’ve heard people say it was good, but they didn’t say why.

Also, I like your list. It makes me think I should make a goal, and then maybe I would get around to reading more books instead of just lamenting that I have so many books to read.

  2. I recommend you read the following five books first and in this order (it being understood you may completely disregard my recommendation):
    1. A Wrinkle in Time
    2. The Help
    3. Something Rotten
    4. The Book Thief
    5. London (and then tell me if it’s worth finishing; I read the first 200 pages and then gave up because it wasn’t holding my interest)

  3. Height of Rudeness!
You should read Wrinkle in Time first, because it will be nice for you.
Also, I’m proud of you for reading twenty books this year– it’s way more than a lot of the US population did.
